🗝️SUNDAY SNEAK PEEK - Feb 16, 2025

Your key to Calgary's headliners, hot spots, & hidden gems.

Hi friend,

February weather is in full force and damn it’s depressing. But I discovered if you put on 1000 layers it’s not too bad. And I found out the bar will let you coat check your ski pants.

So before you let that winter depression sink too deep. Put on your ski pants, take some vitamin D and take a look at this list of cozy indoor activities for the week!

🔥 HEADLINERS THIS WEEK 🔥

Get out of your house and do one (or more!) of these fun events happening this week!

Monday

  • 👪 FAMILY DAY: Check out free admission at Studio Bell. There’s free admission at the Hangar Flight museum too, but they sold out. There is also free swimming and skating in a few places in the city.

Tuesday

  • 🌭 DANISH HOTDOGS: $15 hot dog buffet at the Danish Canadian Club. Which is a fantastic little place if you’ve never been! They have simple, traditional food, that's hearty and delightful in it’s Danish way.

Wednesday

  • 🎵 OUR LADY PEACE: This classic band will rock the Saddledome on it’s 30th Anniversary Tour. I checked and there are still a decent amount of tickets left in a variety of areas, take your pick!

Thursday

  • 😬 F*CKUP NIGHTS YYC: Before you think this is a weird swingers club or something similar, 😅 this is actually a business event! Rather than a traditional conference where success stories are shared, headliners at this event share their biggest mistakes. It makes for a supremely entertaining and informative evening! Cheers to what NOT to do! (I should mention, this is unfortunately sold out, but I wanted to include it here just for your awareness and next time I’ll mention it earlier!)

  • 💍 TEQUILA & FRIENDSHIP RINGS: The Westley Hotel puts on this series of cute “Tequila & ____” events and this time it’s sip tequila and make friendship rings. CUUUUUTE!! Tickets are going fast according to eventbrite.

Friday

  • 🔒 LOCKED LIBRARY: The theme is ancient Rome for this puzzle escape room style event held at the Central Library. I haven’t been to one of these, but they are designed to be adults nights, but families can go, recommended ages 12+.

  • 🎤 MOTHER MOTHER: There are still a few tickets left for Mother Mother at the ‘Dome Friday night.

Saturday

  • 🥔CROSSFIELD FOOD FEST: Every year in Feb the people of Crossfield go wild for their annual foodfest, farmers market and Rutabaga Bowl. You read that correctly. They bowl rutabagas, what’s not to understand. Well I dont know exactly how it works tbh. BUT it sounds gosh darn amazing.

  • 🛥️ CALGARY BOAT & OUTDOORS SHOW: They’ve got fishing, hunting, canoeing, hunting dog stuff, meat smoking, and just lots of whatever you can think of outdoors. $15 entry.

Sunday

  • 🐄 THE BARN MARKET: It’s shopping, but in a barn! This cute market at the historic Shawnessy Barn is not one to miss!

  • 🐾PAWS FOR A CAUSE YOGA: The Calgary Humane Society is putting on this fun fuzzy fundraiser.

🍕 WHAT I’M THINKING ABOUT EATING RIGHT NOW 🍕

Added this section this week. I have so much more but we’ll see how much I can fit…

  1. 🍔 CHEESEBURGER: I subscribe to Elizabeth Chorney-Booth’s Newsletter (she’s the food writer for the Herald and just a genuinely nice person!) and she mentioned in her newsletter she tried True Wild Distillery’s cheese burger and went on to rave about it. So I TOO would like to try this burger. That’s her burger photo there and DAMN it does look good.

  2. HOT CHOCOLATE: As you already know (cuz I told u and u were listening right?) YYC Hot Chocolate Fest is on this month and honestly the top one I wanna try low key looks gross, but it like COULD be good, but curiosity has the best of me - is the Mini-Egg Hot Chocolate from Lics Ice Cream.

  3. 🥪BREAKFAST SANDWICH: I’m thinking of starting a bonus section in this newsletter called “Mistake of the Week” well my worst mistake was that I didn’t go to Bros To Go for their breakfast sandwich when it was open on 17th Ave (they JUST closed) and now if I want to try their savory breakfast sandwiches that look amazing I have to go to Brentwood. I will get you one day breakfast sandwich. 🏃💨

🎉 ICYMI: THE ‘GRAM IN REVIEW 🎉

In case you missed it, here are some of the highlights from our Instagram this week.

  • I re-shared Calgary’s #1 Ramen. Now taste buds are a personal preference, so subjectively this could or could not be your number #1. But I would like to argue that it is Calgary’s most famous ramen.

  • I revealed the secret spot I go to get discount wine. You pick a wine kit and Wine Warehouse does the work for you. Come back in 4 weeks and you’re the proud owner of 28-30 bottles of steeply discounted but extra delicious wine.

  • If you’re looking for somewhere to grab a special brunch on Family Day, Kelsey put together a list here.

  • You can make a difference at this refugee fundraiser event. Live music, and a silent art auction will make this event fun and memorable.

  • This is the perfect weather for take-out Indian food, and wait until you hear about this world famous spot.

  • In last week’s newsletter I mentioned I was heading to Skijordue and here’s a little recap of my day. VERY COLD but very fun. I would go again next year.

UNTIL NEXT WEEK’S INSIDER PEEK!

To be honest, I had 2 more sections written up and I accidentally deleted them. 😭 I think if you press backspace a little too hard, things just UP AND DISAPPEAR on you in this new software. So that’s depressing. I don’t have time to re-write them, but also I’m thinking maybe it’s for the best as I don’t want the newsletter to be too long. My issue is I have way more things to share then there may be space for. I am pondering doing some serious content cuts to make the newsletter more efficient. Let me know what sections you want to keep by clicking on them so I’ll see more activity there in the data.

But overall, what do you think? I hope you are now fully up-to-date, prepared, and ready to party for the upcoming week.

If by chance you forget this entire email by Thursday, DON’T PANIC, cuz I post events for this weekend, Thursdays at noon (or at like 11:45am if I’m feeling ambitious).

See you next Sunday around 6pm! 👋

Cheers!

Sarah, your unhinged bestie (I’m testing out different sign offs… i like it)
